Business Success Thursday Volume 226! The victim vs ownership mentality!

Here is another extract from our upcoming book, The Premier Way!…

At PGNZ this is a subject that is dear to our hearts.

Victim vs ownership! We like to think of it as “extreme ownership”!

In life there are generally 2 groups of people:

  1. The 95% who have the victim mentality.
  2. The 5% who have the ownership mentality.

At PGNZ we focus on hiring only those who belong in the 5% group.

These people are the gold nuggets in a sea of average and mediocrity!

So what is the difference between the two groups?

Here is a few:

The victim group:

This group is always looking for someone to blame for their mediocre or poor circumstances, performance, health, fitness, career, relationships and results. In their minds they were born a victim and they have always been a victim of their circumstances.

They will blame anyone and anything but themselves. They will also search out and keep company with those who will sympathise and agree with their mentality.

This makes them feel better in the short term but it is a recipe for an ongoing life of mediocrity, negativity and misery.

They will blame their parents, their upbringing, their race, religion, colour, their teachers, their boss, their ancestry, the government, the weather, and even their friends!

Instead of looking outside their narrowed up vision and taking control of the things they can control, they are always pointing the finger at others and never taking responsibility for their past, current and future reality.

To my shame I have personally had times in my life when I have resorted to this low level of thinking. And looking back now, I can tell you it was the biggest waste of time and emotional energy in my life!

Look around you and think about all the people in your life. Who can you identify in this group? What traits do they display? How successful are these people? Are they happy people? Are they getting ahead in life? Do they help and inspire others around them?

On the other hand, there is the ownership group! These people are the real gems in society. They are the go getters, the do gooders, the unselfish ones who love to see others succeed just as much as they love to succeed themselves.

They come from all types of backgrounds and upbringings. Some have had a great start to life and some have not!

But they all have one thing in common and that is this: The ownership mentality.

They take ownership and responsibility for their past, present and future.

They take steps everyday to create a better future for themselves and their families.

They focus on the things that they can control and don’t waste time dwelling on the things they cant control.

They understand that to blame their situation on others only brings more grief and misery and that it will get them nowhere.

They are action takers. They get on and make life happen. They control their time, they don’t let time control them.

They don’t think like victims. The world doesn’t owe them anything. They do not expect anything to come easy. They know that anything worth having takes hard work, energy and effort to get.

They understand that life is not fair. They suck it up and get on with it. It is the acceptance of these simple truths that helps this great group of people to get ahead in life and to keep bouncing back up when they get knocked down.

So, team Premier Group, what more can we do to improve our recruitment checklist and system to ensure we are only letting the top 5% to join our ranks?

As we grow it is becoming more and more important to ensure that we keep our culture tight and that we keep out any imposters and fakes who would drag us down so quickly.

Always remember this analogy: It only takes one drop of milk to contaminate a clear bucket of water!

This is the extreme danger in hiring the wrong person! Just one bad hire could can cause so much damage and drama (we don’t do drama here!). It is upon everyone of us to jealously guard the Premier culture and to keep it tight.

What more can you do to help us hire the right people as we grow?

Take action: Review your own attitude now. Are you in the victim group or the ownership group? Now review your team. Who would you enthusiastically rehire? Who needs to move on?

P.S. At Premier Business Academy we have tonnes of great resources to help you on this journey and support you along the way! Please feel free to email me back or go to: www.premierbusinessacademy.co.nz
