Business Success Thursday Volume 225! The detail is important!

Here is another extract from our upcoming book, The Premier Way!…

A common saying you will hear in business is this: Don’t sweat the small stuff!

In business this kind of attitude can be fatal. We say: DO sweat the small stuff!

At PGNZ we are obsessed about the detail. About getting the little things right!

It is all the small things that add up every day, month and year that make us successful.

Yes of course we are always looking at the bigger picture too and planning for the future. This is important. But if you zoom in on any picture, you will see that it is made up of a lot of small details.

Think of it like Google Maps. You can have a 50,000 foot view but the more you zoom in, the more detail you see.

This concept seems to conflict with another one of our fave sayings: Production then perfection! Or: Imperfect action is better than perfect inaction!

At PGNZ it is important not to get tripped up by some of our seemingly conflicting principles and beliefs.

So these 2 sayings are all about having a bias for action. But it doesn’t mean we overlook or drop the detail.

We can still have a bias to action AND pay attention to the detail. These things can go along together.

This is an example of what Jim Collins calls: The genius of the AND.

In his book Good to Great he points out that the truly great companies have mastered the art of carrying out 2 seemingly opposing principles to achieve great results. He calls it: The genius of the AND.

So it means we can move quickly and implement with urgency AND pay attention to the details. We can and do, do both.

It doesn’t mean that we get bogged down in the detail. But yet we don’t overlook the detail.

It is important for us to keep training our upcoming leaders and all associates at PGNZ about what this means and how it works in real life.

In a recent support ticket, we saw an example of how one detail was overlooked in a purchase order which resulted in us losing nearly $7,000 in wasted freight charges.

This is the beauty of our support ticket system. All mistakes and complaints are put into a ticket and emailed out to the team so we can all learn and grow from each mistake.

This is why we are always asking: What more can we do to mistake proof that process? And: What can we do to simplify this process?

How can we make it safer? Simpler? Better quality? Faster?

We are building a team of lean thinkers here at PGNZ. A lean thinker has a bias to action but he/she also pays attention to the detail!

So, take action now: Review your day and your processes now. Are you implementing AND taking care of the detail?

And how about your team? Do they think the same way as you? What more can you do each day to embed these important Premier principles into them? P.S. At Premier Business Academy we have tonnes of great resources to help you on this journey and support you along the way! Please feel free to email me back or go to: www.premierbusinessacademy.co.nz

Cheers to your success!
